In the 21st century, much is being expected of science and technology to contribute to the world's sustainable development through making further contribution to people's daily living and economic as well as social progress. It can be said that advancements in catalysis science which helps create high-performance materials and substances with a view to efficient exploitation of resources, production, usage, disposal and recycling on a global scale, is indeed the driving force behind such progress.

And in order to realize a truly affluent society, it is indispensable for various industries and businesses which take advantage of science and technology, to overcome the challenge of creating a new knowledge regardless of their domains and sectors.

The corporate vision of Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. is to “contribute broadly to society through innovations and creations of materials and products, while keeping in harmony with the global environment.”

Development of superior catalysts not only dramatically improves productivity in the chemical industry but also significantly reduces environmental loading. It would not be an overstatement to say that it is catalysis science which leads the generation of new industries in the 21st century, and indeed Mitsui Chemicals is pursuing the development of cutting-edge catalysts by making use of the science network which it has nurtured and grown for many years past.
With such a network as a platform, Mitsui Chemicals had hosted the First International Symposium of Catalysis Science (MICS 20003) in March 2003, under the theme: "Advanced Catalysts for Polymers", and with participation by the world's front-line catalysis scientists. Mitsui Chemicals is very pleased to note that owing to the active R&D interchanges which were promoted across organizational barriers regarding polymer catalysts giving rise to high-performance materials and substances, MICS 2003 was highly appreciated as a very useful and meaningful symposium.

And so it is that Mitsui Chemicals will be hosting its Second International Symposium on Catalysis Science (MICS 2005) on March 22 and 23, 2005 at Kazusa Akademia Park in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture. Under the leading theme “Green Catalysts for Specialty Chemicals”, the symposium this time will be focused on catalysis science R&D in the fields of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals and crop science, directed at generating new substances endowed with diverse functions and their synthesis methods, which are all together geared toward helping society undergo sustainable development.

MICS 2005 will be honored by the participation of eight invited speakers including the plenary speaker, the Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. K. Barry Sharpless of The Scripps Research Institute, U.S.A.

Moreover, Mitsui Chemicals is honored to announce that it has newly established the "Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Science Award" which is designed to recognize researchers who have made distinguished achievements in catalysis science, and at the same time to contribute to the sustainable development of chemistry and the chemical industry. The awardee for this year will be invited to give a commemorative lecture at the symposium this time.

It is the once again the strong hope of Mitsui Chemicals, that the symposium MICS 2005 would serve as a forum of extensive interchange among researchers from around the world and an excellent opportunity for creating new knowledge in the realm of catalysis science contributing to the development of an affluent society through the creation of high-performance materials and substances.
